Reflection and Action

The Role of Reflection (or lack of) in Parenting

The beginning of a new year provides many of us with the opportunity to reflect on what has happened over the last year(s). Over the last several months, I have found myself forgetting to engage in the practice of reflection, particularly as a parent. As a result, my relationship with Greyson (now 3) has become infused with conflict.

Reflection is critical to my continuing process of unlearning the model of dominant parenting of our society. I have written an article about praxis, the process of action and reflection that enables us to transform the world around us. I first read about praxis in Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed. You can read more about my process here.

Inspiration to Look Differently at Rebellion

Paulo Freire’s writings also inspired me to think about the role of rebellion and how rebellion not only begins the process of freedom for the oppressed, but humanizes the oppressor as well.

As I write in my article, “Because of Martel’s rebellion, I have been able to more clearly reflect on my world-view and attitudes about children and begin to liberate myself, while working to create a liberating environment in the family.” Read more about rebellion here.

Revisiting Fear and Anger

If you missed November’s newsletter, I wrote extensively about my struggle with fear and anger. This seems to be an on-going theme for me, and, in fact has been at the core of my conflicts with Greyson. I have posted that article on the website here.

Happy New Year!

Whenever you may mark the transition to the new year, I hope that you find love, joy and respect in all of your relationships during 2010, the Year of the Tiger!
